Pond Promenade
Innere Zittauer Straße / Corner of Teichpromendade
Hertha, around 1930
» The other day, I rode my bike into town after work to run an errand. But not many people still ride bicycles here. You can hear the rattling and horns of the traffic everywhere. A bus just barely made it through the old gatehouse when turning into Innere Zittauer street! «
From 1900 onward, motor vehicles were a common sight on Löbau's streets. Pedestrians, cyclists, and horse-drawn carriages suddenly had to share the narrow lanes with motorcycles, trucks, buses and cars. All the traffic going through the city still had to weave its way through the old wall with its gatehouses to rush through the town centre. This chaos was inevitable, so the old gatehouses slowly disappeared.
The gatehouse at the foot of Innere Zittauer street was demolished in 1929. The two-lane Hindenburg Bridge was built nearby just two years earlier. Traffic had increased a lot since then and a new route was created to go around the centre. The pond promenade, until then a footpath along the city wall, was turned into a road, and the old gatehouse had to be removed. Today, as many as five roads converge at this point.
