Catholic Church

» Where hasn’t our parish held Mass already? The other day we even had one in a dance hall! Our Catholic community isn't that large, and a lot of my fellow Lower Silesians are rather poor. It is a miracle that we have our own church now despite everything - even if it really is just a replica! «

From around 1850 onwards, ever more people came to Löbau in search of employment, including people from Catholic Silesia and Bohemia. And in 1870, Catholic services were held in Löbau for the first time since the Reformation. Initially, the young parish would use the Holy Spirit Church until it was closed on account of its poor condition. A dance hall then had to serve as a temporary solution, but the parish wouldn't accept that for much longer.
The parish obtained, pro bono, the plans for a church already built elsewhere through connections with the Prague Benedictine Order. Thus, the Catholic Church of the Holy Name of Mary was consecrated in Löbau in 1892. It’s an exact replica of the Sacred Heart Parish Church in Seltzthal in the Austrian state of Styria. Except for one detail: The main door is located on the north side of the church in Löbau. The builders at that time were hoping that a road would be built here. Instead, the main door is still reached by a walkway.
