Old City Wall

Promenadenring

Hedwig, around 1858

» This is where the city wall once stood. When we were children, we often tried to sneak onto the battlements. Of course this wasn’t allowed. I remember a time when a cart got stuck at Bautzen Gate. All the others had to be diverted, so there was a fair bit going on here at Görlitz Gate. It's a real shame that the demolition of the wall will mean all those memories will disappear too. «

Up until the 19th century, Löbau was surrounded by fortifications with double city walls, a battlement and defence towers. But in 1822, road building got into full swing and previously unpaved lanes were upgraded to ‘causeways’. The roads from Löbau were paved with a solid surface and led to the towns of Görlitz, Zittau, Bautzen, Rumburg, Cunewalde and Neusalza-Spremberg. The fortifications were becoming more and more of an obstacle to traffic, especially the particularly low and narrow Bautzen Gate, where carts often got stuck.

The Bautzen gate was the first to be expanded, followed by the Görlitz and Zittau gates. In 1827, the city council decided to gradually dismantle the city walls and defence towers. Only a few sections of the inner city walls have remained. When walking through the the old archway, one can still see the wrought-iron door that once led to the battlements.
