Lachmann Textile Shop
Bahnhofstraße 17
Carl, around 1877
» One would really want to have a shop on Bahnhofstrasse! Alas, once again, Mr. Härtelt has beaten me to it. The builder Brauer is refurbishing the entire façade at number 17 for him. We have never seen such an elegant shop front here before. The Saxon Postillion has even described the shop as one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. «

Löbau's connection to the railway network helped accelerate the town's development. In 1886, the alleyway Görlitzer Gasse was renamed to Bahnhofstrasse. The street became one of the most sought after areas in town when four-storey buildings housing both residential and commercial spaces were built. Mr Richard Härtelt knew this too. The Jewish merchant Martin Lachmann sold his textile business to Härtelt in 1912, who continued to operate it under the same name.
He moved his business to Bahnhofstrasse in 1929. Fritz Brauer, an architect based in Löbau, handled the design and construction management for the new shop premises. His shop window design was especially sophisticated. The house and shop doors are set back two metres from the entrance, with the window panes elegantly rounded towards them. This has almost doubled the window area, attracting a lot of attention in Löbau. The façade has since changed, but the shop still sells textiles.
